British Citizenship

I slipped this letter from an unprepossessing brown envelope yesterday around lunchtime.  It informs me that my application for British citizenship has been successful!  After a citizenship ceremony on the 5th of July, I will officially have British citizenship.  I will be retaining my US citizenship, and have the same dual citizenship status as Lefty, Righty, Mr J, and Coo.

What a great relief to have the Life in the UK test and stacks of forms out of the way.  The only thing remaining is a rather depleted bank balance after such an expensive process!

    2. Congratulations!
Derick decided not to apply for British citizenship as India doesn't allow dual nationality and he would have had to give up his Indian passport. There is a card you can get (Overseas Citizen of Indian) which gives you rights to visit or stay and work in India as often/long as you like but it's not quite the same.
It turns out he did the right thing as we are moving to India - there is a lot less paperwork and fewer restrictions for his work because he still has his Indian passport. He still paid quite a lot and had to do the Life in the UK test for his indefinite leave to remain in UK. We have to check but we think he can keep that without having to apply for a visa if we visit the UK every 2 years.
Hope to see you when we visit on our way to India. Hope you have seen our new blog which Steve Kirk forwarded.
      Love Viv

    3. Hi Viv!
Sounds as if Derick did the right thing by keeping his citizenship! I can imagine it was a much more weighty decision to have to make, because he can't choose dual nationality. I'm following your blog now and am looking forward to reading about your life in India! Hopefully see you soon. :)
